A swimmer’s perspective on environmental change in Lac Leman
A study conducted by the University of Lausanne
The world is changing. Oceans are getting warmer, plastic pollution is cluttering many of our waterways and invasive species are spreading. At the same time, new technologies and management methods are being developed to improve water quality and minimise environmental impacts.
As biologists and open water swimmers, we are very aware that those of us that regularly take a dip in the lake are often those who are the first to notice and be impacted by changes in the lake environment.

In this scientific study, led by researchers at the University of Lausanne, we are aiming to gain an understanding of whether swimmers, boaters and other recreational users of Lac Leman are noticing changes in the lake environment. In particular, we want to look at changes in the amount of water plants in the lake - do you think they are increasing, decreasing, staying the same? Do you like interacting and swimming with water plants or are they more of a nuisance for you?
